Chapter Fifteen

Law #1,719: If a possible mate is already taken, find another one.

Her words aren’t as punishing as the way she delivers them are. The effect they have on me is just what Seraphina wanted.

One minute, we are standing on a sidewalk of a busy side street, and the next, I’m in the middle of a Grecian party. All around me, party-goers are celebrating a peace between the two now ancient kingdoms. The wine flows like fountains around the room and throughout. Food surpluses pile on the tables and tumble to the floors. No one cares the less fortunate people will starve.

Women dance around the various male party-goers. Their topless bodies sway in front of the leisurely dressed men as well as the armored battle ones. Depravity, debauchery, and all sorts of sinful wickedness swarms me, and I remember why I don’t miss this time.

I find it much more enjoyable to live in a modern time. Equality is steadily becoming more important, and though women are still objectified from time to time, they make a stand on their own now.

Even though Briella and Cupid, along with my sisters, would have a fit if they knew, I’ve taken part of every march since 1913. Visible or see-through, I have been to nearly everyone around the world.

Unsure if I am able to move, I pick up and take a single step forward.

I’ve never experienced anything like this before. My past and the world’s past have stayed behind me and never once have I looked back at it. But Seraphina’s words couldn’t stop me from falling backward three thousand years.

I remember all of this very well. Any moment now, the past me will appear in a hallway that leads to the private quarters of the king and queen of Sparta. At the time, I had no idea who I was helping. My assignment was a young woman revered for her beauty, but something about her called to me to help her.

Humans said she was the daughter of a god, but I knew better. She was just a simple human a past shrouded in a mystery she’d crafted herself. Just because she was an incredibly beautiful woman didn’t mean she was born of ethereal origins.

This was when law number 1719 was brought up several times as I helped her woo and seduce two men. One, the king, had the most potential, but the other, a prince from another kingdom, was the one she was meant to be with.

I had helped bring all of it together until it came to that night.

Leaning against the pillar, I watch as I, dressed in a columnar-style tunic, plain and drag so not to stick out in this party and gain attention I don’t want, come down a flight of stairs and give a single, happy nod to a young man.
